Star Sabga's Comments & MakIng "Raai ka Pahar"
(a Mountain out of a Molehill)

Kamla’s Crocodile Tears

--Is hypocrisy innate or acquired? That question arises whenever Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar chooses to speak on controversial matters. The minute her lips part, the blatant, self-serving hypocrisy jumps out and slaps you in the face.

So Star Sabga referred to the Prime Minister as "a stinking coolie". SO WHAT? From where we sit, Sabga's outburst wasn't some random act of hate; it was a completely understandable human reaction – whether politically correct or not – to the targeting of her family and her entire Syrian/Lebanese community by a government led by Ms. Persad Bissessar that has made no bones about branding them criminals and threatening to go after them.

But now, Ms. Persad-Bissessar is deeply hurt and wants to play the victim, a 'bobolee' for sympathy, crying crocodile tears that "such racial divisions still exist in the country."

Give us a break, Kamla, from your suffocating hypocrisy.

Sabga referred to you, personally, as "a stinking coolie", not anyone else. She was and remains entitled to rant and cuss as she damn well pleases about you – the perceived tormentor and persecutor of her family – or whoever else she chooses to insult and denigrate, racially or otherwise, in the privacy of her home. Unlike you, she doesn't have a Monday Night Forum to stand up on and spew divisive, state-sanctioned political fire and brimstone.

Your government chose to 'macco' her private conversations, and now you don't like what you heard: being called a "stinking coolie". Her private comments are no more an attack against the entire Indian population than your public "Black" and "Oreo" comments about Dr Rolwey were an attack against the entire African community.

Your venom was aimed squarely at Rowley; likewise, her rage was directed at you and you alone and remains directed at you and you alone.

It is hilarious, though, that despite the heavily programmed, well choreographed outbursts of righteous indignation from racists, pseudo-racists and a compliant media, the average Indo-Trinidadian couldn't care less about Star Sabga's words. They weren't even slightly fazed. And that’s because real Trinis understand how we use language in Trinidad and Tobago.

Weaponising the word 'coolie' hardly ever stems from deep-seated racial hatred toward the wider Indian community; it is a direct insult aimed at a specific mindset and behaviour of individuals who may or may not be Indian. We do have Africans in Trinidad with a "coolie" mindset, and conversely, many Indians with what Indians themselves call a "N-word" mentality, both terms referring to behavioural traits and low-class actions, not the biological superiority or inferiority of either group.

So jump off your bar stool, Kamla, before you tumble off. Sit your tail down safely on your peera, like the one you have in your kitchen, hush your mouth, and cool yourself. Go drink some Angostura Bitters and club soda with a twist of lemon. Very refreshing. It works for me.
