Independent Senators Must Hit Back and Hit Back Harder

I am beginning to lose respect for the independent senators, and for one reason only: their failure to appropriately respond to the Prime Minister's barrage of abuse against them. It makes me wonder if they are really "eat ah food" senators, so "hungry for ah senate wuk" that ... they have become suckers for insults and gluttons for verbal abuse. They seem willing to tolerate the debasement of their characters - and by extension their families' good names - by one who should be the last to call people's integrity into question.

Then use the appropriate sitting and setting to launch a blistering broadside against the Prime Minister - under parliamentary privilege - to match the tone and content of her attacks against you. Put it on the Senate record, then, walk out and resign your commissions on principle.

Let the President and the Prime Minister explain to the country and the international community why nine citizens of good repute would rather give up the prestige of the Senate than serve under a certain type of behaviour.

The Prime Minister would be embarrassed beyond redemption, not only because of the mass resignations but because of the dammaging contents of the broadside. Because you would have spoken within the Senate walls, you cannot be sued.And because you resigned, you cannot be accused of stooping just to "keep ah senate wuk."

Senators, hit back, and hit back hard, if not harder, and resign. Your resignations would prove to the public the principled, self-respecting individuals you are, what you represent and what you will not tolerate. The Prime Minister's statements have already given insight into who she is, what she represents and what she is comforatble with.
