The Special Operations Bill: Why I’d Rather a Bandit State Over a Police State.

Wayne Sturge recently threw out a provocative question to critics of the Special Operations Bill: "Do you rather a police state or a bandit state?" Unhesitatingly, I say, and on my behalf alone, an unequivocal yes. Bring on the Bandit State ...

When a bandit invades someone's home, the occupants are entitled to defend themselves to the best of their individual abilities, bolstered by the help of family, friends, and neighbours.

But when rogue police officers enter our premises - smashing doors, windows, and furniture with no legally justifiable reason, perhaps simply doing someone a favour - and rough us up, we are expected to shut up and accept the abuse. If we resist, we risk being brutalized and maimed, or becoming another statistic, another notch on some trigger-happy police officer's belt.

When uncouth and uncivil officers treat us with disrespect, as they so frequently do whether in our homes or on the streets, we cannot respond to them in a similar manner. We are forced to remain silent and tolerate the indignity.

Comply then complain, we are instructed.

And when we do complain to senior officers about the disrespect, the physical abuse, and whatever else these rogue elements choose to conjure and fabricate, we receive no meaningful satisfaction. Insincere, mealy-mouthed apologies from police leadership are given grudgingly, while the offending officers simply continue their unprofessional, spiteful, wicked, and disrespectful modus operandi.

With home invaders, I can deal with them on their level. With the police, I cannot.
I would rather face a criminal invader any day than face a rogue police officer taking advantage of me, denying me my rights, and shooting me, only for him to be congratulated and his actions praised because he stood ready "to do violence" on behalf of politicians who cannot "sleep peaceably in their beds at night."
