The Misleading Trinidad Guardian "Fake Cops" Headline

Is the Trinidad Guardian covering for criminal cops? Why then today's headline: "Fake cops ambush, kill St Ann's man" when there is nothing in the story itself to support the headline that the attackers were civilians impersonating police officers? There is always this assumption by newspapers, notably the Trinidad Guardian, and even within the TTPS, that those wearing police tactical gear including police bullet proof vests to commit crime are always criminals playing 'dress-up', masquerading as police officers, even though several arrests and court cases over the years have destroyed that myth, and established that serving police officers engaging in brazen acts of criminality are by far more prevalent than isolated cases of criminals impersonating police officers.

Public perception that police officers themselves are carrying out serious criminal acts of outright banditry, kidnapping, human trafficking, extortion and brutal murder is not to be dismissed as paranoid figments of public imagination or anti police propaganda. The perception is vindicated.

We need only look back to October 2024, when serving police officers Ashraf Mohammed and Jason Michael were arrested and charged with the kidnapping and murder of used-car dealer Sacheal Kungeberry. They didn't buy props; they used a marked police vehicle and official tactical uniforms to execute the crime.

More recently, the arrest of three men, including a soldier and a police constable, charged with kidnapping, robbery, and misbehaviour in public office. And lest we forget, the shocking April 2026 murder of a female police officer by a male colleague who orchestrated a brutal internal assault inside the San Fernando Municipal Police Headquarters to steal police firearms.

What makes current police leadership think that criminal cops are not to be found within the four specialized units that former Commissioner Earla Christopher authorized to keep and continue using the tactical gear, or that corruption and serious misbehaviour stop at the level of constable, and has not permeated upwards?

Is there magical immunity at the top to the rot? To pretend so, is not simply naive, its complicit.
